The terrain and ground shape of the trekking stages is very diverse. In many places, there are hills up to 70 m of altitude covered with trees and vegetation which is easy to travel through, but there are also difficult dense forest passages. In some places the pine trees are spaced like in a park, in some places there may be a windfall or dense underbrush where traveling speed won’t exceed 1 km/h. But there are only a few spots where the going gets really tough.
You will find many parts of the route going over bare rocks (round rocks formed by glaciers) or cliffs up to 30 m high. During rain, these rocks and cliffs can get very slippery, especially, if they are covered with moss; caution is advised.
In this landscape, you can feel the full severity and picturesque nature of Karelia. The organizers did their best to choose the most beautiful locations for check points on these stages. The diverse and rapidly changing topography will demand a relentless driving force and precise orienteering skills from the competitors.
There are detailed maps with scales of 1:10 000 и 1:20 000 available for all routes.
